Our Story
Petiquette Animal Behaviour was established in 2003 when Susan McCaul recognised a need for a more holistic and dog-centric approach to behaviour and training services in Christchurch.
After completing a Masters degree at the University of Canterbury, Susan felt an increasing desire to find work within her passion – dogs and their behaviour. She trained with her dog, Zeus, at Christchurch Polytechnic and attained a National Certificate in Animal Training. She then gained invaluable experience working with a huge number of different dogs at the local SPCA, before working in a veterinary clinic and completing a qualification in Veterinary Nursing – achieving top honours in her class.
Around this time Susan started to look at, and research, different methodologies around the world, and was inspired by what she discovered. Over time Susan’s drive to back her knowledge with science has led to more research, and refining her knowledge and practices, which should constantly evolve for any professional at the forefront of their industry.
During this period Susan was busy raising two children, building a business and working, all the time thinking about the practices she was using working with dogs, and refining what she taught and the results she was getting. This journey of discovery has been an exciting one, and has led to the revolutionary techniques that she uses today.
Second Nature is Susan’s own method of training and working with pet dogs all over the South Island of New Zealand. Whether she is working with a recently rehomed rescue, a puppy that has found its new furever home, or a dog that has undergone significant surgery or the loss of a loved one, Susan and Second Nature provide the solutions you have been looking for.
Susan works independently from all other companies, so you can be sure the advice you receive is not influenced by any third party. When Susan’s not travelling for Petiquette in-home consultations, she’s spending time with her children and their sports, and her own beloved dogs, Pluto and Polly.
